A. A surge is a disturbance that travels through a residential electrical power system, potentially damaging a home’s electronics and appliances.
Q. Where do surges come from?
A. Surges can be generated inside and outside the home.
External Surges: downed or damaged utility lines, lightning, utility grid transfers and widespread power outages
Internal Surges – Motors turning on/off: refrigerators, dryers, garage door openers, HVAC fans, shop tools and AC units
Q. How do you protect your electronics or appliances from most surges?
A. You can install a Whole House Surge Protector which is designed to provide protection at the point of entrance to the home. This is externally mounted and compatible with any manufactures loadcenter.
A. You can also install a surge protector circuit breaker within your loadcenter that will protect your circuits. With these types of surge circuit breakers, you must make sure they are manufactured specially for your loadcenter.
Q. Do these surge protectors protect against direct lighting strikes to the home?
A. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Due to the overall amount of excess energy caused by these events surge protectors and connected devices will most likely be damaged.
